Religious Education
From September 2024, all Catholic schools across England and Wales have a new Religious Education Directory (often referred to as the RED) entitled “To know you more clearly” – this is the full RE curriculum to be taught in Catholic schools.
In the Diocese of Shrewsbury, our Catholic schools are moving to a scheme called The Vine and The Branches which teaches the new curriculum objectives. We are at the start of a staggered move onto this scheme and new curriculum, and our Year EY, 1, 2, 3 and 4 children will be using the new RED curriculum, Year 5 and Year 6 will move to this new curriculum in 2025.
In the new curriculum, all the year groups will study the same half term topics, while their objectives, scripture, and content within them will be progressive through the years, building on what has gone before.
Each year group has an overarching theme for the whole year’s work:
Year 1&2 – revelation – how do people know about God?
Year 3 – celebrating the Eucharist
Year 4 – people whose lives have been transformed by faith and hope in God.
Whilst Year 5 & 6 are not due to move onto the new scheme until September 25, all class teachers have been using the new RED methodology for a couple of years now, in the lead up to this curriculum implementation, and the main change will be the structure of the content in the new units of work across the year. Years 5&6 will continue to use The Way, The Truth and The Life RE scheme for this year.
