Physical Education
At St. Monica’s, the Mission Statement is ‘Loving to learn; Learning to love like Jesus’. Our PE curriculum has been developed within the spirit and context of this. We aim to enable all children to reach their full potential through a love of learning.
We believe that through the activities we offer children they can develop a love and passion for sport. Thus we endeavour to provide quality learning opportunities for each and every child and appreciate every person’s aspirations and achievements.
At our school, we are dedicated to offering our pupils two hours of high-quality PE each week. Our curriculum offers students a comprehensive and engaging introduction to the world of physical activity and sport, providing a rich and diverse range of experiences. Through dynamic, hands-on learning, our curriculum fosters a genuine love for sport while promoting active and meaningful participation.
We believe PE and Active Play provide opportunities for pupils to recognise their own strengths and which areas require self-development. By providing pupils with ample opportunity for different levels of competition, we believe they develop resilience and perseverance that can be aligned with all areas of the curriculum.
Physical education develops the children’s knowledge, skills and understanding, so that they can perform with increasing competence and confidence in a range of physical activities. These include dance, games, gymnastics, swimming and water safety, athletics and outdoor and adventurous activities. Physical education promotes an understanding in children of their bodies in action. It is divided into children’s competency through their multi abilities; these are broken down into physical, social, personal, health and fitness, cognitive and creative skills.
Through the development of these skills, each child will be encouraged to develop the personal qualities of enthusiasm, enhanced mental state, emotional wellbeing, commitment and fairness. Combined these skills will enhance learning and help to ensure a positive attitude towards a healthy lifestyle. Thus we enable the children to make informed choices about physical activity throughout their lives.

What makes Physical Education special at St Monica's?
At St. Monica’s, enrichment in Physical Education plays a crucial role in providing our students with a well-rounded education. We go beyond the National Curriculum to help children understand the importance of physical fitness, health, and overall well-being. Our curriculum promotes teamwork, sportsmanship, and leadership, nurturing not only physical abilities but also social and emotional development. These values are foundational for life, and by fostering them at our school, we aim to create an environment where students are learning to collaborate, support one another, and grow as individuals.
We’ve built strong partnerships with local community clubs, offering a variety of extra-curricular activities, taster sessions, and assemblies. The strong connections with community clubs are an excellent way to give our students real-world pathways to continue their passion for sport outside of school. Additionally, in our recognition assemblies we celebrate the sporting achievements of pupils both within and outside of school. We hope that students are inspired and can see how their involvement in sport can extend beyond the classroom and become a lifelong pursuit.
The spirit of play and physical engagement is embedded throughout our school culture. Our students enthusiastically embrace OPAL play opportunities, ensuring that active play is an essential part of their daily experience during playtime and lunchtime.
Extra Curricular Sports
At St Monica's we endeavour to offer a wide range of sports opportunities for all of our children. Our current offer includes:
Football: Run by an external provider, enabling children to develop into a team and then take part in competitions throughout the year. We also offer girls coaching during lunchtimes throughout the year.
Cross Country: A popular after school club run by Miss Lambert and supported by parent coaches all year. Children have the opportunity to compete in numerous events throughout the year; including Walton Gardens (a highly competitive competition with schools across Warrington).
Netball: Run by Mrs Campbell in the dry months. Children then have the opportunity to represent the school when competing in numerous events throughout the year.
Boxing: Run by an outside provider, children learn new skills and try out a sport they may not have come across before. Many of our attendees go on to join the club outside of school.
Dance: Run by Miss McCaldon at a lunchtime. The children enjoy learning new routines, experimenting with movements and learn to perform confidently as a group.
