Art and Design

At St. Monica’s our Mission Statement prompts us all to ‘Never stop trying’ and ‘Aim to be the best we can be’. In planning how we teach art, craft and design, these statements inspire us to provide a curriculum that embodies some of the highest forms of human creativity.

A high-quality art and design education should engage, inspire and challenge pupils, equipping them with the knowledge and skills to experiment invent and create their own works of art, craft and design.

As pupils progress, they should be able to think critically and develop a more rigorous understanding of art and design. They should also know how art and design both reflect and shape our history, and contribute to the culture, creativity and wealth of our nation.

Our children take great pride in their artwork, which they incorporate into other subjects and showcase in displays, both physical and digital at exhibits both within school and locally. Displaying their own creations fosters a strong sense of belonging.

If you were to walk into an Art lesson at St Monica's you would see:

  • Children who are enthusiastic about their learning and are producing work with a range of media

  • Children who are able to discuss their artwork and the artist/art movement that has inspired their creations

  • Children who take pride in their work and are keen to showcase their taught skills

  • Children who are proficient in drawing, painting, textiles, sculpture and other art, craft and design techniques

  • Children who evaluate and analyse creative works

  • Children who are inspired and are willing to take risks

Our Pupils Say:

'I really like doing abstract art and junk modelling. I really like making things to give to my mummy'

- Reception Pupil

- Year 1 Pupil

- Year 2 Pupil

-Year 4 Pupil

- Year 6 Pupil

What makes Art & Design special at St Monica's?

Art & Design is a popular subject in our school for many reasons. It offers a unique way for children to express themselves and explore their creativity. It helps them to develop problem-solving skills, boosts their confidence and enhances their emotional expression. Seeing work displayed gives children a sense of pride and accomplishment, building their sense of identity and belonging within our school and local community.

Within our school this includes visits to galleries and exploration of a range of artists. In addition, we offer a range of enrichment opportunities for the children, including a drawing club for KS1, a KS2 craft club and a lunchtime art club where children create a range of pieces using different media. These enrichment activities instil and inspire our pupils, whilst allowing them to refine and strengthen their skills further in this area.

Our school also works towards achieving the Warrington Art Award every two years, as well as taking part in the PAN Exhibition, where each class works to create pieces artwork on a chosen theme, this is then exhibited across Warrington.

Loving to learn,
learning to love like Jesus
